acute insomnia: Short-term insomnia that has a clearer cause, such as some stressful event.

advanced sleep phase syndrome (ASPS): A circadian rhythm sleep disorder where a patient feels very sleepy early in the evening and wakes up very early in the night.

bedwetting: Involuntary urination while asleep after the age during which bladder control should occur.

bruxism: The grinding of teeth, generally accompanied by clenching of the jaw. It is a common sleep disorder that 30 million to 40 million Americans suffer from.

chronic fatigue syndrome: A disorder marked by chronic mental and physical exhaustion and followed by other symptoms, arising in even healthy persons.

chronic insomnia: A type of insomnia that is not short-term and does not resolve. It can go on for a month or years.

circadian rhythm: The rough 24-hour cycle in the physiological processes of living things, such as plants and animals. They are modulated by external cues, such as daylight, and affect the sleep schedule.

circadian rhythm sleep disorder: A family of sleeping disorders that affect the timing of sleep. Victims are unable to sleep and wake at set times.

delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS): A circadian rhythm sleep disorder of the time of sleep, peak period of alertness, hormonal and other rhythms. The result can be falling asleep after midnight then difficulty waking in the morning.
